Welcome

The California Green Building Barometer

The California Sustainability Alliance is committed to bringing together key stakeholders in order to overcome barriers to sustainability. Our goal is to develop strategies to harvest the next generation of energy efficiency, and build on the momentum created through complementary sustainability initiatives.

The Alliance focuses on four areas that play a central role in the California energy landscape: water energy, sustainable communities, green local government, and commercial office buildings. Commercial office buildings, for example, are responsible for 10% of the state’s total electricity consumption and 6% of its natural gas consumption.

California already has some of the most aggressive green building policies in the nation and is making substantial progress, as indicated by the Alliance’s Green Building Barometer. Yet, there is still a great deal more to be done.

While the Green Building Barometer cannot tell us what motivates building owners to go green, it enables stakeholders – regulators, industry, nonprofits, and the general public – to take a pulse on the state’s progress and better determine where to focus our efforts. Check back every quarter for updates, and visit the Alliance’s blog for regional reports with timely market insights from the Alliance's Advisory Committees.

California has weathered some tough times. And now, with memories of critical shortages of energy and water resources still fresh in our minds, we are preparing for the unknown impacts of climate change.

Against this backdrop, our state’s policy makers have adopted the most aggressive energy and environmental goals in the nation. The good news is that many different types of resources and support are now available to help us achieve these ambitious goals.

The California Sustainability Alliance is bringing together all of the key stakeholders needed to overcome barriers to sustainability. Together, we are developing strategies to harvest the next generation of energy efficiency, building on the momentum created through complementary sustainability initiatives such as climate action, smart growth, renewable energy, water-use efficiency, waste management, and transportation management.

Together, we will discover new paths, while bridging gaps to find the most efficient and economic ways to achieve the "best of the best" in energy efficiency and sustainability.

The California Sustainability Alliance works to bring together all of the key stakeholders needed to overcome barriers to sustainability. While sustainability is inherently broad and holistic, the Alliance’s focus is on energy efficiency, climate action, principles for “smart growth,” renewable energy development, water use efficiency, waste management, and transportation management within California.

In 2008 the Alliance began recognizing leading California organizations through the Sustainability Showcase Awards. These awards highlight the efforts of organizations that have successfully implemented sustainable policies, programs, practices and technologies. The following organizations have been selected as the 2009 winners: Jones Lang LaSalle, Los Angeles Housing Partnership, Town of Los Gatos, City of Santa Monica, County of San Diego, Sonoma County Water Agency, and Los Angeles Community College District.

These winners have been chosen for their successful development and implementation of best practices in water, waste, energy, and overall sustainability. Their practices and programs demonstrate outstanding leadership and innovation, paving the way towards the state’s sustainable future.
