Green Local Government
Local government is both a major leverage point, and potentially also a major barrier, to sustainability.
- California cities, counties, agencies and special districts routinely establish a multitude of policies, rules and regulations that affect their own behavior, as well as the decisions and actions of their constituents. The broader the governmental entity’s constituency and reach, the broader its potential impact on sustainability adoption.
- During the provision of essential public services, local government tends to be a large consumer of energy and water, and a significant emitter of greenhouse gases. A decision by local government to itself be sustainable has major direct and indirect resource and societal benefits.
- Although local government is often a major proponent of sustainability, it is not unusual to find conflicts among local codes and ordinances that become barriers to implementation of the very policy goals that the local government seeks to achieve.
