Sustainable Communities
In order for local government and developers to make informed decisions, better information is needed about the energy, water, waste and greenhouse gas impacts of development and design decisions to facilitate informed negotiations and collaborations between local government and developers.
- Develop a "Sustainable Communities Tool" that estimates the range of potential carbon impacts of various development and design decisions at key points in the development cycle, so that both local government and developers can understand the greenhouse gas, energy, water, waste, transportation and other impacts of their decisions).
- Establish one or more effective forums for new development that bring local government and developers together with other key stakeholders (utilities, community leaders, engineers, architects, and local businesses) very early in the planning process to collaboratively and continuously develop workarounds to sustainability barriers.
- Assist market leaders and early adopters in developing and implementing strategies for greening their portfolios of existing and planned communities.
