2009 SUSTAINABILITY SHOWCASE AWARD RECIPIENTS
Now in its second year, the Sustainability Showcase Awards recognizes the successful sustainability policies, programs, practices, and technologies implemented by leading organizations. The Sustainability Showcase highlights the efforts of organizations in the state of California that are paving the way towards California’s sustainable future. This year’s award winners have achieved notable success in the areas of waste management, water efficiency, green leasing, and financing mechanisms.
The Alliance is recognizing leaders in five areas: Commercial Buildings, Multifamily Housing, Local Government (small, medium and large), Water Agencies, and Other Products and Services. We are pleased to announce that the following organizations have been selected as award recipients:
Jones Lang LaSalle - Commercial Buildings
Jones Lang LaSalle’s mission is to minimize buildings’ environmental impacts by creating real value in energy and sustainability for its clients and in its own operations. Jones Lang LaSalle established the first Sustainable University in their industry, training employees in development, management and leasing of sustainable, energy-efficient buildings.
Los Angeles Housing Partnership - Multifamily Housing
The Los Angeles Housing Partnership is a leader within the affordable housing industry due to its early adoption of sustainable practices in energy efficiency, renewable resources, water efficiency and recycled water, waste reduction and recycling, and smart planning and growth. The Los Angeles Housing Partnership developed the first LEED Gold mid-rise affordable housing project in Los Angeles.
Town of Los Gatos - Local Government (Small)
The Town of Los Gatos is committed to working with its employees and community to adopt sustainable practices. To encourage sustainability, Los Gatos created a program called “Los Gatos: Growing Green Together”. As part of this program, examples of simple sustainable practices and commitments from green businesses are highlighted each month on the town’s website.
City of Santa Monica - Local Government (Medium)
The City of Santa Monica has been an early adopter of sustainable policies in all aspects of local government. In addition to educating and informing the public about the benefits of sustainable practices, the city also tracks its progress against sustainability metrics and publishes its “report card” online.
County of San Diego - Local Government (Large)
The County of San Diego is focusing on programs that build strong and sustainable communities, including the Energy Management Program, Green Business Program, Green Building Program, Stormwater Management Program, and Climate Change Team. The County is working with their internal departments as well as partnering with local utilities and organizations to maximize adoption of sustainability best practices.
Sonoma County Water Agency - Water Agencies
Sonoma County Water Agency made a commitment to provide carbon-free water by 2015 and has implemented numerous programs in energy efficiency, renewable energy, waste management, and greenhouse gas reduction to help meet this goal.
Los Angeles Community College District - Other Products and Services
The Los Angeles Community College District, working with leading environmental organizations, developed an inventive, innovative and cutting-edge sustainability policy that placed them on the forefront of social and environmental responsibility. The policy addresses LEED building certifications, recycling, waste, construction, and education.
Winners in each category were honored at the California Sustainability Alliance Showcase Awards Luncheon held in February. The organization that was selected as best exemplifying holistic adoption of sustainability was the City of Santa Monica.
