LAACD has undertaken many efforts to make itself into a model of sustainability for educational institutions throughout California.

With over $6 billion to modernize its nine colleges, the LACCD's Sustainable Building Program is one of the nation's largest green construction efforts. Students are preparing for green-collar jobs and other careers in state-of-the-art buildings, with 85 expected to meet LEED™ (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards. The District has received numerous awards for its environmentally responsible construction projects.

East L.A. Solar
1.2 megawatt solar farm, East L.A. College
East LA College

East Los Angeles College is LACCD’s first campus to install 1.2 megawatts of solar power. The $9 million solar installation, the largest in the District to date, comprises 5,952 photovoltaic panels mounted on seven carport structures, covering three acres. The system will generate approximately 1.67 million kilowatt-hours per year, enough to power 150 homes.

  • Clean, renewable energy to meet 17% of the campus’ electricity demand.
  • Guaranteed power and pricing. East L.A. only pays for power produced with no capital or operating costs.
  • Carport structures provide shaded parking for 530 cars and improved lighting at night.
  • Offsets production of 1,160 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually - equivalent to removing 320 cars from the road.
  • Private financing arrangement allows LACCD to use bond money to pay for infrastructure upgrades and new buildings.
  • Serves as a model for students to study practical applications of green technologies.
Child Development Centers

Green Child Development Centers

Reflecting its commitment to sustainability, the District’s Child Development Centers are green. The centers are designed to meet LEED standards to create an eco-friendly environment for children to learn and play, and students train for careers. Seven of the District's nine campuses have new child-care facilities either completed, under construction or in development. These centers can accommodate more than 700 children, and include green features such as:

  • Classrooms with carbon dioxide sensors to adjust outside air intake on poor air quality days.
  • Drip irrigation, waterless urinals and water control valves that limit water consumption.
  • Low VOC (volatile organic compound) paints and sealants that reduce indoor air pollution.
  • Recycled materials are used in products such as carpeting, back splashes, counter-tops and outdoor safety surfacing.

Los Angeles Mission College

Los Angeles Mission College’s solar farm is located on the roof area of Parking Structure A, which was opened in July 2007. The solar farm is expected to generate enough electricity to meet the energy needs of the structure.

  • The solar farm consists of 1,128 modules and generates enough electricity to power about 22 average homes.
  • A 225 kilowatt inverter converts generated power and feeds it to an electrical switchboard located on the ground floor of the Parking Structure. From there, the renewable power is available for use throughout the campus, supplying energy to locations normally served by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.
  • The project will produce an estimated 250,000 kWh on a year basis -- 6% of Mission’s total annual electricity usage.
  • The solar panels cover about 17,000 square feet —roughly the size of a professional ice hockey rink.
  • Mission College currently spends an average of $450,000 a year on electricity costs, which accounts for 4% of the District’s total annual electricity costs.
  • The College estimates that it will see a reduction to its electricity bill of approximately $27,000 per year.
L.A. Trade-Technical College’s South Campus Project

South Campus Project

Los Angeles Trade-Technical College's $126 million South Campus project modernizes one of the nation’s leading technical colleges.

The intricately designed project is the largest construction project in the District. It consists of two five-story buildings with more than 120,000 square feet of office and classroom space, and includes a Technology Classroom building (66,228 square feet) and a Student Services building (56,302 square feet). The South Campus project also has a utility building (1,800 square feet) and extensive landscaping.

  • Developed to meet the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED silver rating standards.

    • CFC and HCFC free equipment
    • Construction waste management and recycled and local materials use
