The Los Angeles Community College District is the largest community college district in the nation. Its nine colleges serve more than 250,000 students annually in 36 cities and communities that cover 882 square miles. For more than seven decades, the LACCD has provided affordable, quality education for 3 million students. In fall 2009, 65% of its students were from underserved minority populations.

With more than $6 billion in voter-approved bond funds to modernize its nine colleges, the LACCD's Sustainable Building Program is one of the nation's largest green construction efforts. The District is training students for green-collar jobs and other careers in state-of-the-art facilities, with 85 expected to meet LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards. The District has received numerous awards for its environmentally responsible construction projects.

The District's program is also a source of revenue for local, small and emerging businesses.

The District has 144 projects in progress and has completed 313. Additionally, by the end of the building program, the LACCD projects a 52.3% percentage increase in square footage – an increase from 5,153,634 square feet to a projected 7,849,030 square feet.
