Santa Monica Big Blue Bus transit station

Santa Monica has demonstrated its dedication to energy use and fossil fuels dependence. The City often utilizes technologies to achieve its sustainability goals. Some of the technologies involved in lowering Santa Monica’s carbon footprint and environmental impact include:

  • Alternative fuels: The city uses LNG, CNG, biodiesel, hydrogen, and electricity. The municipal fleet uses alternative fuels in 82% in its vehicles and the Big Blue Bus is 100% alternatively fueled.
  • Rebates: Santa Monica encourages residents to take advantage of water rebates and grants, rain harvest rebates, and energy rebates on appliances and fixtures, some of which are offered through Southern California Gas and Southern California Edison.
  • Tech Expos: The City hosts the annual Altbuild and AltCar Expos to educate thousands on the latest technologies in sustainable building and alternative transportation. Over 20,000 people participated in the 2008 Expos.
  • BIKE Santa Monica map: Includes bike paths and trails, bike lanes, bike routes, bike shops, and bus routes, including Big Blue Bus lines. Provides residents with a resource to increase their usage of alternative transportation.
